The Ewell Family
The Ewells family is what this story starts to be about near the end of the book. This is because Mayella Ewell claims that Tom Robinson raped her and beat her up. Atticus was chosen to represent Tom in court and trys to prove that it was was Bob Ewell her father who beat her up, not Tom. Throughout the case Atticus has Mr. Ewell come to the stand, he has him write his name to prove that he is left handed, he does this because Mayella has bruses on the right side of her face, and Tom's left hand is crippled because he got it caught in a cottin gin.
Mayella Violet Ewell's Testimony: Mayella's testimony started with her saying that she was supposed to chop up a chiffarobe but she felt weak so she asked Tom if he could do it and she'd pay him for it. When she went in the house to grab the money to pay him he grabbed her around her neck and kept hitting her. While this was happening she started screaming and her Mr. Ewell heard and came running. The next thing that she remembered was Mr. Ewell standing over her and then she fainted. When She said Tom raped her and Tom stood up, everyone saw that his left arm was twelve inches shorther than his left so they found it hard to believe that he hit her. She did everything she could to avoid answering questions from Atticus. She also kept denying that her father ever hit her.
